Looking for a good NNTP Program
« on: October 26, 2010, 01:22:24 PM »
Hi,

Forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong forum I am on some extremely strong medications due to a recent injury.

I have been using Newsleecher for almost two years, but recently I built a new machine and I have seen a bad side to newsleecher, during header retrieval it can sometimes go over 2.5-3.5gb of ram for some groups when all said and done. Now adding things into the queue with the latest "beta" can really send it over the edge and just plainly crash.

It seems like the programmer for Newsleecher has decided to put the program on the back burner until a later date, but no date has been announced and I don't feel like spending another "Yearly License Fee" for something that isn't being worked on.

I am curious on how well people have used alt.binz and how the memory usage/cpu usage is. NL can really chew up my CPU and Memory, I'm more or less looking for feedback. I'm considering moving from Windows 7 to Fedora Linux as well.

Altbinz doesn't use header retrieval, it uses search functions using free indexing sites. It's actually much more useful, and if you wish to browse using headers you can go to the indexing sites it uses e.g newsleech or binsearch and browse the newsgroup headers there. It's actually far more useful than browsing headers, I used to use grabit for header retrieval and have used several other programs before but now I use only Altbinz for search & download and Binsearch for newsgroup header browsing. I don't use usenet for text threads I use only binaries, so if you use the text groups, then Altbinz would not be for you. I have run Altbinz successfully in Linux as well using the Linux program Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator). I don't have any particular memory issues or CPU usage that I've noticed other than If I have loaded an NZB that contains the info for several DVD's.

u actualy doin't need to go to any of those indexing site to browse newsgroups, u can do the browsing from within Alt.binz, at least with binsearch and newzleech, in nzbindex u can use a wildcard search to do the same.
