Using AltBinz in 2 different locations.
« on: September 29, 2010, 12:50:55 PM »
Hi,
Just wanted to check on what the restrictions are for this, as dont want to get banned for looking like Ive shared my account etc.
Basically I split my time between my parents houses, so wanted to check if I could use both at the same time (in the uk so our connections arent the quickest)?

Rules say it can be used on 3 different machines only ... but nothing about if 2 of those machines are on different ip addresses

Cheers
Fin.

I assume u and your parent live in the same town or somewhat close by otherwise setup would obviously make no sense. Assuming that it shouldn't be a problem with alt.binz account! But it might be a problem for your usenet provider check their policy on account sharing...

2 different ips could only become a problem when u can basicly be sure it's not the same person useing the account like maybe regular (simultan) usage and the distance between those places is a couple hundred km or even different countries, that sort of thing...

You're right to believe that using Alt.Binz on 2 different machines @ 2 different addresses *at the same time* would look like account sharing.

Edit: david beat me to it!

Bugger.... my parents are about 6 miles apart and I often queue things up so no doubt they would be running simutanously as I pop back and forward all the time.
Figured allowing it to run 3 times on the same IP seems pointless as its using the same bandwith... so I got an app Im only allowed to use in 1 location :(

So in your opionion as Mods am I allowed?

Cheers

as i've said my opinion is u won't be getting any problem with your altbinz account!

but u could very well get in trouble with your usenetprovider if that provider doesn't allow (usenet)-account sharing. on flat accounts it usualy isn't allowed, on blockaccount it usualy is.

Ok thanks David for the help, appreciated bud.
I'll have to check, I use Astraweb at home, so will need to check to see if my ISP provides a news service I could try if it doesnt work.

if its the same wan ip for both clients i dont see how altbinz authentication would pick up more then 1 unless it uses some sort of hardware id checking

u can use alt.binz on up to 3 computers. those pcs can be in one location or in different location. u can also use those 3 simultaneaously. the important thing is that judging by the location and timeline it is plausible to assume a usage by one person. regular logins hundreds of km apart (simultaneously or within minutes) would of course be somewhat suspicious.
