download 2 things at once?
« on: March 06, 2007, 05:08:17 PM »
I tried to run 2 instances of alt.binz on the one computer (putting a second copy of the program in a separate folder and renaming the .exe file, but it still brings up the original program if it is running.

I did a search in these forums on running multiple instances of alt.binz and I see there is a request for that.

Ideally I'd like to be able to be downloading 2 different things at once, so is there another way to do this that I have missed in the setup options? Or is it possible to run 2 instances of alt.binz at the same time?

Thanks in anticipation

It isn't possible to run more instances.

It is in a way possible, but you need to use VmWare, will cost you some resources though.
Just create a slim version of Vmware Windows XP machine, install altbinz within it, and you are set to download with 2 instances.

Good luck

Since your download speed can't be increased by this, the only result will be that you'll need to wait longer for either download to complete.  Say it takes 10 mins to download one file and 20 mins to download two.  With one instance of alt.binz, you'll have your first file downloaded and unrared in 10 minutes, then it moves on to the other, which will be done after 20 mins.  With two instances, you'll need to wait 20 minutes to see either, since your download speed will be shared between the two (i.e. halved for each).

As I posted in THIS THREAD there is one good reason to run multiple instances, and that is if I want to absolutely separate the servers that I am downloading from (download file-A from server-1, and download file-B from server-2 -- without multiplexing the servers together)

1. Select server A.

2. Pause any files you don't want to download from server A.

3. Connect & download from server A.

4. Disconnect & deselect server A.

5. Now select server B, unpause the rest of the queue and download.

That's fewer steps than you'd have to go through with two instances.  In either case, you're talking about manual intervention.

As a temporary solution, I've added command line parametar '-mi' to run multiple instances.

So, run main instance as ussual. But if you want to run 2nd or 3rd or Nth run it with altbinz.exe -mi

I would strongly suggest keeping separate dirs.
