Not everybody lives in €-land

Hi,

just tried out alt.binz and during connecting to ssl news-servers the program just consumes 100% cpu and is not reliably connecting. I wanted to know if this got fixed in newer versions and donated a resonably (but small) amount to get the latest version (before maybe donating a bigger amount). However, my payment (a bit more than 5 AU-$) was refused, because it turned out to be just 3 EUR. I know that paypal takes some of the money, but I think not realizing how it is for different people from different countries to pay in euro is not the right policy either. Either say how much you want to have as a minimum or allow any amount and live with that. At least, everybody knows then what terms and conditions there are. This "donate, and if you're lucky I'm pleased"-policy sucks, because both parties are pissed off afterwards: You because you feel insulted that it was too little and I because I took the effort and you refused it.

Regards,

Me

If 'terms and conditions' are unclear to you, may I suggest you to find some other program. That policy, which btw you don't have any rights to judge, works for 99% of ppl that donated. I've stoped beeing pissed long time ago. Doesn't bother me anymore. I just return donation and that's it. You don't like it, find yourself another program. Or better, write your own and then you can decide if you want to give it for free or take any amount or set some minimum amount.

well... i donated as well and after reading all these threads about donations i wasn't so sure any more if it was enough at all. i'll definitely donate more if the new versions run as great as the v.0.25.0 is running atm. but i see this like you do: i would prefer a fix amount of money to "donate".

maybe something like this:
5 EUR to get the current version but without any further updates.
another 10 or 15 EUR to get unlimited updates.

this would satisfy those who don't wanna buy a pig in a poke and if they like the new version they can donate more. and eveyone's living happily ever after :D

I agree to ch4os :)

Rdl, do you know of the SSL-Issue and has it been fixed in newer versions or not? It's a showstopper if you cannot reliably connect... If it's improved, I might be tempted to give larger amounts.

No, once you're in, you're in for 'a life' (unless you brake few basic rules)

I'm not aware of any ssl issue. That part is exactly the same as 0.25.0.  0.24.0 -0.24.2 are a bit different and could have issues. I'm also aware that currently ppl are having problems with ssl on usenetnews as described in http://www.altbinz.com/forum/index.php?topic=1392.0

Thanks for the info. I am a usenet-news customer... :( So possibly it is not your fault.

@Hecks: Please do not post your comments in my posts. I guess you know that there's a dedicated reply function.

However, I found out how one can reliably connect to usenet-news.net. Simply add ssl.usenet-news.net as three different servers, one on port 443, one on port 563 and one on port 8080. Then the connect problems are gone. I would have added that to http://www.altbinz.com/forum/index.php?topic=1392.0 but the thread is locked.
