Windows 7 - Network Crashes *Resolved*
« on: November 04, 2009, 04:08:59 AM »
My Config:
Q6600 Proc
XFX 780i SLI Mobo
4gb G.Skill
eVGA 8800GTS

That is my basic config for the PC, and for the record I am using the on-board NIC.

What is happening, and this seems to be happening with any usenet client (Alt.Binz, NewsRover, SuperNZB, etc.), is that I will be downloading for any random amount of time and then the connection will kill itself within Windows only. It isn't like my ISP is killing my line since my other computers stay up and running on the net without issue. All I have to do to resolve the connection issue is to reset my NIC (disable/re-enable).

I am running the officialy Windows 7 Home Premium version (preordered when it was $50). I am using the nforce chipset drivers for ethernet and storage, I haven't tweaked any settings...nothing. I even went through the process of thinking that maybe it was the install, so I completely formatted the drive, reinstalled Windows 7 and tried again. Same problem...

Can anyone lend a hand with this issue? I am able to download from multiple websites at the same time via Firefox, etc. at full connection speed (20Mbps) without issue, it just seems to be when I am running a usenet client. I know this isn't an Alt.Binz specific issue, but I figure since it is only happening with UseNet clients that maybe someone here would be able to lend a hand.

Thanks in advance for the assistance!

Did 7 install the driver only? or the full *with the crap firewall* ?

Had the same problem on XP when i had nvidia ethernet, had to uninstall the driver+software to install driver only.

Changed computer since, can't tell you with seven now, sorry

I tried with just the Windows 7 driver, the nForce driver on its own and then the nForce driver with the Forceware software.

The only thing I haven't checked is the Windows Firewall, I didn't think about it because logically it doesn't make sense since it is killing the whole network connection...but it is Microsoft we are talking about and they don't think logically all of the time.

Thanks for bringing that up, I will give that a try and report results here.

As this isn't an Alt.Binz bug, I've moved it here.

Hecks, thank you for moving this to the correct area, wasn't sure if it should go in General or not.

As for the issue...

I think I found the issue, 15.51 nForce Driver.

I decided that I would try a different driver because it was all I could think to do with everything that was having problems, and the problems seemed to be growing. I went back to the 15.25 nForce drivers and that has resolved the issue thus far. This is the set of drivers that I was running all through the Windows 7 RC, fyi.

Basically what this solution is for: If you are running the XFX nForce 780i SLi Mobo, the 15.51 nForce drivers seem to cause issues with downloading from multiple targets at the same time. I moved back to the 15.25 version (which is still WHQL for Vista 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit) and the issue hasn't arisen since. If anything happens, I will be sure to update you guys but if not, this seems to be the "fix" for the time being.
