Complete Newbie:- Help in setting it up
« on: November 10, 2007, 07:49:47 PM »
I've found myself a 'NZB' file to download a got a Newshosting.com account but I stalled completely on setting it up.

Maybe I've got the host name wrong or something very simple but it won't connect to it.

Any clues on how a dumb idiot can get this working?

Any responses very welcome.

Maybe this would help

http://www.altbinz.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=787

Well maybe....

I've downloaded Quick start Guide for beginners but the
para 2 b) bit plain old fashioned doesn't work for me.

Newshosting has to be a gold-plated standard service ?

So I'm stuck ?

You need to enter the server details that were provided to you by Newshosting - so you need to double-check with them that you actually have the right info.  There's not much anyone can do to help you here unless you can get past this stage yourself, I'm afraid.

It seems to want my user name and password.....

I'll double check that that bit is OK.

Are there any other elements of the Alt.binz software that need adjusting?

Make sure that you type in your username and password (don't copy/paste), and click Apply (if you're editing an existing server entry).  It might also be helpful to disable firewall and any antivirus temporarily, and re-enable each once you know Alt.binz is connecting OK.

To configure Alt.binz for basic usage - you just need to work through the Quick Start Guide, it's all there.  The one on the Wiki is more up to date, though (link in my sig). :)

I'm using Vista 64, no idea about it's firewall other than its on.  ZoneAlarm has a beta version for Vista 64 but I don't know how to get my hands on it.  I'm terrified of a Microsoft OS not having a firewall on Broadband.

I'd give up rather than open it up to the vermin who infect computers!

Many thanks for the tips re:-Wiki... that the sort of thing I need to know!

(It might turn out that newsHosting were having a 'bad hair day' !  *LOL*

If you have broadband, then your router should already have a hardware firewall that basically makes software firewalls redundant and a waste of resources, IMO (some may disagree :)).

I'm not even sure if Alt.binz has been confirmed to work properly on Vista 64-bit, maybe some else knows ... but in any case, even though Alt.binz should be UAC compatible (since version 0.24.1), if you're having problems make sure you're running as Admin, and install it in a folder other than Program Files.

Router/Modem is...old... so no firewall in it.

I'll have a serious stab at it tomorrow morning...

Many thanks for your support...

Update:-

It suceessfully downloaded 10 of the files.  So something seems to have worked at last.

all I did was re-install the 'Server' commection info clicking or not on groups and/or SSL something.

No idea which.

Many thanks for support !

Now these are the areas which probably caused the original problem:-

When entering the server there are 3 boxes on the right:-

Select Group
Article cmd
SSL

Also when do use Apply and Add as primary ?  I assume always ?

I don't seem to be able to go back and have a look at what I've done so I don't which which was the winner on clicking the 3 boxes !

As its works I'm a bit nervous of messing with it , but it would be nice to know for next time I have to install it !

Many many thanks for the support I got last night !  It made the difference between giving up and persisting !

Also the NBZ file I downloaded was the zip version but I tried the other option and that worked .  (From NZBMatrix)

:)  :)  :)

Double-click on the entry in the Setup > Servers list to see its current settings.  Yes, those other options can help with certain servers (though you can ignore SSL unless you specifically know you're connecting to a secure server).  When you make changes, click Apply to save them.  When you want to add a new server to the list, click Add as Primary.  Use the checkboxes next to the entries in the list to toggle servers on/off. :)
