Files are removed from the list even if they arent downladed
« on: November 06, 2007, 12:23:00 AM »
Hi,
I know that my ISP doesn't provide FULL access to Newsgroups.
When I try to download files, some are unavailable.
I know that and I've a limited access to another news provided.
Usually, I keep my unloaded files and I download them after (not the same day).

But with alt.binz 0.25, after 2 retries (I configured 2 retries), files are removed from the download list without any notification.

I don't know that the files are not downloaded. And I'm unable to use the unloaded list with the other news provider.

How can I do to keep the unloaded files on the list with a status of "unavailable on this server" instead of seiing the files removed without notification ?

Thank you.

You can't. Things work that way in alt.binz. You could maybe raise retry count/ delay between retries.

Things work that way in most binary readers. In fact I've never seen or heard of one that doesn't.

Silly programmers. They can't make anything right :)

It's too bad. I've only used Grabit and wanted to have a better software.

I've heard about Alt.Binz and wanted to test it... but the minimal functionnality I use every day is not supported. This makes Alt.binz unusable.

Let's me explain my case :
I want to download a binary.

I get the nzb using the Alt.Binz interface and add it in my download list.
Alt.Binz tries to download it but unfortunately, the files are not available from my ISP.

If I did that with my Grabit software, the unavailable messages stay in the download list with a message "Unable to load". I can decide to remove them from the list or keep them.

I want to keep them for the future. When I quit the software, it asks me if I want to save the download list. Yes for sure !

After one month of wait, I'm decided to download theses damn files. I have only one solution : using a new paying News server.

I subscribe to a 3 days service. It's enough for what I want to do. Download the files... it's easy, they are still in the download list. And that's it. The work is done.

If I try with Alt.Binz, I'm unable to get the list of unloaded files and worst of all, I've no information that the files were not downloaded. I missed what I wanted to download without any notification.

I'm surprised that this lack doesn't bother anyone...

And adding the second news server in the list or increasing the number or retries doesn't solve any problem. If the message is unavailable, it will stay unavailable all the time. And the second news server, I'll be able to connect only next month, when I'll decide to subscribe to it for 3 days...

I don't see it that way. You will clearly see that articles are unavailable & will not loose them from queue if you up your retry count/time. So when you're around, you can pause collection and program will not retry it then.
If this is not good by your standards, there is always your Grabit software.
