How do I add additional Servers??
« on: July 03, 2007, 07:38:55 AM »
I have not been able to add additional servers to my server list.  I want to add several definitions of the same server using different ports but so far I have not been able to figure out how to add additional server definitions.

Please advise

Is this not working for you:

Setup > Servers > (fill in new server details) > click 'Add as Primary'

or:

Setup > Servers > double-click on existing server name > (edit details + new server name ) > click 'Add as Primary'

?

I can add one instance of my server definitions but that is all. I want to have 4 definations of my server each with two ports active with different port numbers.
Example:
Newshosting.com 2 ports active on 119
Newshosting.com 2 ports active on 23
Newshosting.com 2 ports active on 80

and so on.

When I try to add additional ports it simply writes over my existing single defination for port 119.
Do the servers names have to be unique or do I only have the ability to add one definition with as many ports and the same port number?? One should be able to define as many ports as needed all with different port numbers an desired.
Also the tab "Add as backup" never seems to go active. What activates that tab??

You can add as many as you want.

First, double-click on one of the server entries to bring up its details, then click on one of the other entries.  The Add as Backup button will now become active - click on it to add the second server as a backup for the first.  You can delete the second server as a primary after this, if you want.

Hecks,
Thanks for the reply. I followed your instructions and unfortunately nothing changed.  I still cannot add additional servers.  No matter what I click on, the
"add as backup" tab never comes to focus.  I have tried faking out the server name and address to something other than the one defined as primary but no joy.  As I said, noting I change will bring the backup tab active.  Either this is a bug,  I have a bad copy of the program, or I am not setting the parameters correctly( which I doubt).  There is not too much one can screw up on the "servers" option screen.  I just cannot add more than one definition.

Any suggestions??

Well, finally got it to work. Must disconnect before any additional servers can be added. Once disconnected, defined server name and adder. Added as primary and it was added to server list.  Then went in and edited entry to set parameters the way I wanted them.  Not sure if the is design or unclear logic but finally got server definitions added for each port set.

When connected, status shows program struggling with newshosting to get entries to connect and authenticate. So far only three connections have been verified and connected.

Wonder  if bandwidth is an issue here.  I have mine set to 515 as that is the max speed via my ISP.  ALT.Binz may be trying to establish full band width on each port which will fail due to not being a fractional portion of the total bandwidth available.

Thanks,
Goody

As you've no doubt now discovered by experimenting, you can add all the details you want at the first stage, then click Add as Primary.  I can't help you with Newshosting (you'll need to speak with them yourself), but the max speed you set in Setup > Connection is just a reference number for the graph and limiter.  If you want to throttle your speed as a percentage of this number, click on the bottom left where it should currently read 'No Limit' to bring up the menu.  I doubt this is the source of your problem, though.

Hecks,
Thanks again for the info.  Doing a little experimenting with the speed settings, it appears that NewsHosting has some difficulty with multiport connections from the same account, ie, ports 119,25,23,80. if I set all the connections to the same port number, they connect and settle down quickly.

I will discuss this with Newshosting tech support.  Anyway, I will continue to get acquainted with the program functionality.  Being a Newsleecher bigot there are some features in that program I have gotten used to and will have to see if AltBinz can provide something similar.  Accessing a group headers is easier and more user friendly in NL.

Thanks again for your help

Accessing a group headers is easier and more user friendly in NL.

Binsearch tab > select group from list > click 'Browse' to see latest headers = 5 seconds.  Surely more convenient than downloading headers, especially when you want to quickly browse lots of groups.  But then I'm biased against header downloading, which I think is pointless anyway. :)

You can extend the Binsearch newsgroup list with the file posted elsewhere in this forum, can't quite remember where ... Newzleech has a similar function, but you need to start a search first for the group list to become active.

Hope you manage to sort out your Newshosting probs.

Hecks,
Thanks again.  As for downloading headers, guess it is a matter of preference.  With NL, you can activate several newsgroups as a logical group which gives you the ability to browse/search several selected groups at once.
This is a very nice option.

Also, frequently, I may just be looking at what has been posted with no particular subject in mind and see something that sparks my interest. Other times I use SuperSearch for a specific item.  it just depends on the circumstance.

I can also understand your position on downloading headers, especially when you may not use anything you just downloaded.

It would be convenient to select a group from the FAV list and be able to immediately see the headers for the group.  Again, it is a matter of preference.

AltBinz has a lot of nice features and works well, and for now the price is terrific.  One can see a lot of hard work has gone into this program.  I enjoy using it and look forward to future improvements.
