using alt.binz as a regular newsreader
« on: June 10, 2007, 10:05:59 PM »
Hi-
I downloaded the list of all newsgroups from Supernews. But an X beside the one I wanted. Now how do I get the list of headers?

I want to try out this software. Just want text, jpegs and mpegs. I don't need or use many nzb's. I'm not new to usenet. Been using Agent for years. I'm on satellite internet and can only get bandwidth between 3 am and 6 am. So I need to schedule downloads. Can't do that with Agent.

Thanks.

The Newsgroups tab is for use with Xpat searching only, alt.binz doesn't support header downloading.  Use the search engines instead to find what you want and just add the files to the queue.  You'll see the same headers as with any other newsreader, except that most search engines display similarly-named posts as collections. Yes, they're passed to the queue via intermediate NZB's (generated dynamically by the engines), but the process can be pretty invisible if you want.  Really, when you get the hang of browsing groups individually, it's exactly the same as downloading headers in batches and searching your collection - except A LOT QUICKER.  And of course, you can search multiple groups at the same time without having to download a lot of garbage headers first.

Unless there's a specific reason that you need to keep the headers?  Never been able to think of a good one myself ... :)
