Custom Programmable Tab
« on: March 08, 2007, 06:27:56 AM »
You can file this under 'blue skies thinking' (or possibly 'pie in the sky thinking'), but having a tab that was completely programmable would certainly make alt.binz unique.  That is, a tab that could be pointed at any search site, with a simple scripting interface for processing search requests, results and actions.  It could be something that would help to increase the longevity of the programme without a constant need to compile a new version when a site changes something.

It's probably completely impractical, but then again I'm not sure how much plumbing is needed behind the scenes to implement the current search engines in alt.binz (a lot, I'd guess).  I'm curious to know a little more about how you do it, anyways.

There are bittorrent clients like BitComet that have a tabbed browsing window with a list of search engine sites. It basically just opens the actual webpage within a IE window embedded in the client, instead of tapping directly into the site's underlying database. The advantage there is that website re-codes did not pose any problem. The disadvantage is that it required MS IE. Unfortunately, it did not let users add their own sites to the list, or remove dead ones.

This all-in-one feature is probably one reason why BitComet grew to become so popular out of all the many torrent clients, especially among beginning torrent users who would otherwise not know about these torrent sites to go to.

Any news/update for this request?
Would be really nice to be able to customize the tabs, since one could use other search-pages then the few hard-coded listed.

Shouldn't be such a headage to make, since most of the functions (fetching, extracting etc.) already is in Alt.Binz. So will "only" be the user-editing part that will be required.
Would also be much easier to update each tab then, since it doesn't need to be hard-coded into the program itself.

Anyway, would just be a very, very great feature to add to Alt.Binz. One of the few things I think is missing, to make the program perfect/complete :)
