Long filename errors silently ignored?
« on: March 19, 2007, 05:52:35 AM »
I just downloaded a collection, watching alt.binz everything seemed to be ok. When I looked in the download directory the only thing there was a file
altbin.temp
which was about the size of one of the download rar files.

What I assume happened was alt.binz copied or created altbin.temp when it downloaded each file in the collection then could not rename it because the full path of the file would be too long. It did that for each file in the collection (all 1.2GB <sigh>) leaving just the last.

When I queued the collection I just accepted the default download directory which happened to be particularly long.

I think it pretty bad that alt.binz just ignored these errors and carried on.

Well it would help if you provided exact download path where files should have ended up and nzb file. Based on what you have writen path was correctly created and was not larger then 255 chars, but when combined with filename it was ?

I had the same problem with an NZB generated within alt.binz. I checked the path, and sure enough the filenames were longer than 255 characters due to the excessively long NZB folder name.

NZBs usually have very long names, and they get even longer if you select more than one file to download at once. My suggestion is to create a folder based on the NZB filename rather than the full name of the NZB, i.e. the filename you get if you download an NZB from a web browser. I hope that makes sense!

I'm afraid it was all deleted long ago. I downloaded 3 similar collections at the time, 2 worked 1 (which had a longer download directory name) didn't. I downloaded the same collection again trimming the suggested download directory name and it worked fine.

I guess you join part files from the temp directory to a file altbin.temp either directly in the download directory or in the temp directory and move it to the download directory, then you rename it to what it should be without checking for errors.

I suppose alt.binz doesn't know the file name lengths till it has the nzb file which is after you specified the download directory. It would be nice to predict the problem in advance but detecting the problem would be a start.

I managed to get a tail of the log files, which completely filled my hard drive (getting the tail of a log file that enormous wasn't much fun lemme tell ya!)

ABZ was stuck on "Decoding" and wouldn't go any further. Here's a snippet of the error message:

I get Alt.Binz Crashing a LOT.  Main reason I donated was to try and resolve it and it is this that is in the log files.  about 100 Mb's worth.

Download path is e:\Download dump\ and filename is heroes.308.hdtv-lol.rar or something similar, it is the only thing in the queue.
